Heian Jingu Shrine(平安神宮)

1. Location-Access

This shrine is located at Okazaki Area, near Nanzen-ji Temple in Kyoto.
It can take 25 minutes from Kyoto station to Heian Jingu-mae bus stop by Kyoto city bus #5.

2. Who was this shrine built?

1) The Heian Shrine was founded to celebrate the 1100th year anniversary of Heian capital relocation by Emperor Kannu. It was built to ensure the emperor himself as deities
in 1895.
2) In those days, the decline in Kyoto had something to cover the eyes. The city was devastated by the war of Shogunate. After the Meiji restoration and the capital were transferred to Tokyo, the industry and population of Kyoto city declined.
Kyoto’s passion for reconstruction and city renewal plan made Heian shrine built.
(当時の京都の衰退ぶりは目を覆うものがあった。幕末の戦乱で市街地は荒廃した。    明治維新と東京遷都に伴い、京都の産業衰退と人口減少した。
3) In 1940, Emperor Koumei, the last emperor in Heiankyo era was enshrined too. The front shrine was renovated with the original style of Chodo-in, the building for politics and ceremonies in Heian period on about half size.

3. What is this shrine famous for ?

1) Power Spot パワースポット

① The Heiankyo was selected this land based on the thoughts of the four gods to protect Kyoto. Four gods are Seiryu (blue dragon), Byakko (white tiger), Suzaku (red Chinese phoenix) and Genbu (god of water).

② As the shrine enshrines Emperor Kanmu who brought long prosperity to Kyoto over 1000 years, we can have the benefit of prosperous business and realization of your earnest.
2) Jidai Festival with a parade of classical fashion   古典衣装行列の時代祭
On October 22 every year, one of three main festival in Kyoto city is held in Heian Shrine.  It is a parade by thousands of Kyoto locals who dress up in costumes from various eras between the 8th and 19th centuries.
(10月22日に行われる京都三大祭の一つの時代祭は、ここ平安神宮の大祭です。何千人 も京都の地元民が8世紀から19世紀の様々な時代の格好で正装し、行列に参加する。)

3) Heian-Jinguh Garden  平安神宮神苑

There are 4 gardens in east west, south and north surrounding the shrine with an area of 33,000㎡(8.1 acres). The extensive main garden, constructed by Jihei Ogawa, is the chisen Kaiyuu style garden. It collects smart ways of showing landscape-techniques with a national scenic spot. You can enjoy the quiet atmosphere of Japan such as Cheery blossom in spring, moth and lotus in summer, autumn leaves and winter snow scene.

4. What is highlight?

Shrine Building 神社建物

1) In Nagoshi shinji, “Chigawa-no-wakuri” is performed to go through the ring made of big thatch and clean the dirt for half year. It is an event that hopes for sickness in the second half.

2) Here we are at Heian jingu Shrine. The green tiles on the roof and red pillars are beautiful with the white sand of the courtyard.

3) In1895 founded, of the current buildings, Taikyoku-den, Outenmon, Sooryu-rou, Byatuko-rou, Horu and Ryubiden were built.

4) The front shrine (worship hall) with Irimoya-Tsukuri located at the central of Outemon is called Taihokuden. The right and left pavilions is called Souryu-rou at the east and Byutuko-rou at the west.


Jingu-shien  神宮神苑

1) Let’s go and see the gardens. The view from Taiheikaku Bridge over the pond is worth

2) In the broad shrine garden, lots of Yaebenishidare Sakura blossom out.
Especially, the view in the southern garden and eastern garden are wonderful.

3) At the eastern garden the view of reflection of Shobikan on the pond is superb.
You can also enjoy 20 different kinds of 3000 pieces of various cherry-blossom trees at the Sakura garden.

4) As it is a circuit style garden, it takes about 30 minutes of walk time at slow pace to look around all the gardens.
