Location-Access

This temple is located near the east of Arashiyama at Rakusai Area in Kyoto.

It takes about 60 minutes from Kyoto station to kokedera by city bus #73 , 3 minutes walk..

（この寺は洛西エリア、嵐山の東側に位置する。市バス73系統で京都駅から苔寺まで約60分、下車徒歩3分。）

Who was this temple built?

• This temple is Rinzai Sect and the idol is Amida Nyorai. The foundation patron is Gyoki and the restration is Souseki Muso in 1339.

（臨済宗寺院で本尊は阿弥陀如来である。開山が行基、中興開山は1339年夢窓礎石である。）

 

• The building of this temple were burned down in the Ohnin War, and came to ruin two times the flood in Edo period（1603-1867）.

（全ての建物が殆ど応仁の乱で焼失し、江戸時代(1603-1867)は2度に渡って洪水に見舞われて荒廃した。）

 

• The garden as dry garden style went into ruin. It is said that the current temple covered by moss, was created by the end of Edo period. 　Because it is influenced by the topographical factor such as the valley nearly with the following river.

（枯山水であった庭園が荒れ果ててしまい、今日のように苔で覆われたのは江戸時代も末期からのようである。理由は、すぐそばに川が流れる谷間の地形的要因である。）

 

• This temple used to be the sight-seeing temple to be done by any visitor, but the general tour is prohibited and the application by reply postal card is requested for visitors.

（この寺は、かつて誰でも参観できる寺院であったが、現在は一般拝観を中止し、往復はがきによる事前申込みが必要である。）

 

What is this castle famous for ?

• This temple,Saihou-ji temple is called “Koke-dera, Mossy Temple”. That is the reason why the temple is covered by 120 kinds of moss looking like the beautiful green carpet.

（この寺、西芳寺は苔寺と呼ばれている。それは、この寺が120種類の苔により、緑の絨毯を敷き詰めた美しさになるからである。）

 

 

• This garden comprised of the upper dry landscape garden and the lower pond-centered around the Ougon-chi (pond).

(この庭は、上段が枯山水、下段が黄金池を中心とした池泉回遊式庭園の2つから成っている。)

 

• There are a mossy garden with a central focus on Ougon-ike(pond) at the east side of temple. And Sairai-do(main hall), Shoin (library) and Noukeitou (3 storied pagota) are located in the east area.

（境内東側は黄金池を中心とした苔の庭園であり、東側には、本堂（西来堂）、書院、三重納経堂などがある。）

 

• In the garden, there are three tea rooms such as Shounan-tei, Shounai-do and Tanhoku-tei. You can see stones in a dry garden style and the Shitou-an as the foundation hall .

（庭園内には、湘南亭、少庵堂、潭北亭の3つの茶室がある。境内北側には、枯山水の石組があり、開山堂である指東庵が建っている。）

 

• In the main hall, there is the sliding door with picture painted by Insho Doumoto.

And Amida Nyorai-do is enshrined.

It is reported that Shounan-tei( Impotant cultural property) was the tea room which was established Soseki Muso, went into ruin, but reconstructed by Shouan Senno the second Rikyuu senno.

（本堂には、堂本印象の筆による襖絵があり、本尊阿弥陀仏如来が安置されている。

湘南亭（重要文化財）は、夢窓疎石の時代に建てられ、その後、荒廃した。千利休の次男 千少庵により再興された。）
